Beta glucan is a type of water soluble fibre found in oats, as well as barley. It is recognised for being effective in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels due to the viscous layer it forms in the small intestine. This viscous layer is believed to not only reduce the uptake of dietary cholesterol, but it is also thought to help reduce re-absorption of bile acids. As bile acids are made from cholesterol, the body needs to to draw upon the pool of circulating cholesterol to produce new bile acids when bile acids are excreted. It is this lower uptake of cholesterol from the gut, combined with more bodily cholesterol being used to produce bile acid, that is thought to help with the reduction of cholesterol circulating in the blood.
Regulatory Information
Oat beta glucans have been well researched and therefore there is a good amount of evidence to support the associated health benefits. There are two health claims that have been authorised that could be possible to obtain with the use of oat beta-glucans (at the time of writing this 03/01/2020).
Beta-glucans contribute to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels
The claim may be used only for food which contains at least 1 g of beta-glucans from oats, oat bran, barley, barley bran, or from mixtures of these sources per quantified portion. In order to bear the claim information shall be given to the consumer that the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3 g of beta-glucans from oats, oat bran, barley, barley bran, or from mixtures of these beta-glucans.
Consumption of beta-glucans from oats or barley as part of a meal contributes to the reduction of the blood glucose rise after that meal
The claim may be used only for food which contains at least 4 g of beta-glucans from oats or barley for each 30 g of available carbohydrates in a quantified portion as part of the meal. In order to bear the claim information shall be given to the consumer that the beneficial effect is obtained by consuming the beta-glucans from oats or barley as part of the meal.
