Yeast (1-3), (1-6)-β-D-glucans differ from the beta glucans that are found in oats and barley (cereal beta-glucans are joined by 1,3 and 1,4 carbon linkages and are associated with maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels and lower blood glucose rises after a meal); yeast beta-glucans are insoluble, whereas ceral beta glucans are soluble. Yeast beta glucans also tend to have long branching.
Regulatory Information
While there have been a number of health claims that have been submitted to EFSA for Beta-glucan of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, none of these health claims have been authorised (at the time of writing 03/01/2019). The claims that have been submitted relate to the immune system.
Although there are no authorised health claims relating to the role of yeast beta-glucans in supporting the immune system, it can be combined with immune supporting ingredients such as copper, folic acid, iron, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc.
