Choline Health Claims
There are 3 authorised health claims relating to choline:
- Choline contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism
- Choline contributes to normal lipid metabolism
- Choline contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function
Dosage
The above health claims may be used only for food which contains at least 82.5 mg of choline per 100 g or 100 ml or per single portion of food. In order to obtain this amount of choline from choline chloride, 110.6mg of choline chloride would be required.
There are varying upper limits set for choline across member states, depending on the type of product. For example, Belgium has set a maximum limit for choline of ≤1500mg in food supplements. Denmark has a much lower maximum daily dose set at ≤ 500mg for food supplements.

The adequate intake (AI) for most adults is 400mg/day choline. For pregnant and lactating women these requirements increase to 520mg. For children below 15, AIs are lower:

Children aged 4-6 170mg
Children aged 1-3 140mg
Infants 7-11 months 160mg
