Ferrous Bisglycinate

Product code: P14923

Ferrous Bisglycinate is often referred to as ‘gentle iron’ and is favoured by those who experience sensitivity to other forms of iron.

  • Fully reacted bisglycinate
  • Bioavailable, gentle and soluble form of magnesium

Stable

Formulating with iron as part of a multivitamin and mineral product can be problematic as metallic ions can interact with other components of the food. Vitamin losses have been shown to be significantly greater when vitamins have been combined with metal sulphates, compared with amino acid chelates (Marchetti et al 2000).

Ferrous Bisglycinate is good for the fortification of milk and dairy products as it does not cause peroxidation of the milk lipids during storage. Fortification of iron using other forms such as ferrous sulphate can promote oxidative rancidity in fats, which results in off-flavours and colours.

Bioavailable

Bioavailability of iron is poor (14–18% for mixed diets, 5–12% for vegetarian diets). There are many dietary factors that can influence iron absorption. Bisglycinates are not as negatively affected by dietary inhibitors, which can significantly reduce bioavailability.

Gentle

Many iron supplements are poorly tolerated, particularly with a daily dose of >20mg. Gastrointestinal side effects may include nausea, constipation, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, gas and bloating. Ferrous Bisglycinate is often referred to as ‘gentle iron’ and is favoured by those who experience sensitivity to other forms of iron. Because it is a bioavailable source of iron, it is a much gentler form.
