Dosage
The reference intake for Vitamin A (as retinol equivalents) is 800μg.
There is no adequate data to derive a UL for β-carotene.
Vitamin A must be calculated as μg of retinol equivalents on the basis that 6μg of beta carotene is equal to 1μg of retinol equivalent. The USA have a different conversion so care should be taken to calculate based on where a product is being sold.
The Department of Health encourage formulating to less than 7mg/day of beta-carotene and advise a label statement : '[Beta-carotene]* should not be taken by heavy smokers.'
