Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7 or ‘Vitamin H’ is a water soluble B-vitamin. B-vitamins play an essential role in carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolism; biotin is an essential co-factor for four carboxylase enzymes in the synthesis and metabolism of glucose, fatty acids, amino acids, genetic materials and stress hormones.

Biotin is most commonly associated with its role in contributing to healthy hair skin and nails. It was formally known as ‘vitamin H’ as deficiency symptoms most commonly associated with biotin include hair loss, along with brittle and thin fingernails, conjunctivitis, dermatitis and neurological symptoms.

There are 7 authorised health claims permitted for use for food which is at least a source of biotin; these include:

  • Biotin contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism
  • Biotin contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system
  • Biotin contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism
  • Biotin contributes to normal psychological function Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair
  • Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes
  • Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal skin
  • Biotin is most commonly found in hair skin and nails formulas or B-complex formulas.

The RDA for biotin is 50µg. To make a claim relating to biotin a product must contain 15% of the RDA per 100g/100ml/ per serving (depending on the type of product).
