Astaxanthin is a red-pink pigment found in seafoods such as salmon, krill and shellfish. It is also the pigment that is responsible for the pink colouring in flamingo feathers.
Astaxanthin is a catotenoid and is structually similar to beta-carotene, but with chemical differences that means that it is considered safer. It is more potent than beta-carotene as an antioxidant and is anti-inflammatory.
Studies into astaxanthin have focused on its potential benfits on cardiovascular health.
Dose
Only a very small dose is typically used; 6-8mg is a typical daily dose. The exact toxicity and upper limit is currently not known. Astaxanthin is fat soluble and therefore it would be advised to consume this with a meal containing fat to improve bioavailability.
