Lycopene is a carotenoid that does not have any Vitamin A activity (it is not converted into vitamin A as the body needs it). It has significantly more antioxidant capability than beta-carotene.

Lycopene is the substance that gives tomatoes, watermelon and other fruits and vegetables their red colour.

Lycopene has also been found to protect against the carcinogens in tobacco smoke and exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays.
